I can’t believe it is already almost November. Time is going so fast. Do you feel it too?
This month I decided to consciously slow down, and to share with you here on my blog, every month, the vegetables that are in season.
Eating what is in season usually means better flavour and a lower price, and it is a nice way to show children how the year moves.
Here are my five favourites this month:
Kale
A Dutch classic, harvested from September to March. Let the children tear the leaves off the stem, then roast them into crispy chips or stir them through a soup. I love making pesto with it too! It is so tasty with penne, and a great way to introduce a new vegetable to children in a familiar way. Come on, who doesn’t like pesto?!
Pumpkin
A forever favourite, and you can make so many dishes with it: gnocchi, pasta sauce, roasted cubes with a little oil, soup, and even desserts! I make fantastic pumpkin donuts, yum! And scooping out the seeds is a job kids love.
Parsnip
Not very famous in Italy, but since I moved abroad I am obsessed with it. It is so versatile! Grate it into pancake batter, or roast it in sticks like fries.
It is tasty in any shape.
Celeriac
I love celeriac in every shape! It looks a bit different than other veggies but it’s worth to try!
My absolute favourite is celeriac schnitzel: cut the celeriac into slices, boil them first, and afterwards bread them with egg and breadcrumbs. It is also lovely mashed together with potatoes for a light dish.
Cauliflower
Let the children break it into florets, then roast them until golden. I always love watching kids look at cauliflower: “they look like trees,” they often say, and it warms my heart. I love cauliflower fritters too!
One small idea:
Take your child to the market and let them pick one vegetable they have never tried.
No pressure to eat it, just to notice it, and perhaps even to cook it for you!
